Why will my Epson Stylus R200 not print well on ink jet photo paper?

I have used my printer to print photos onto glossy photo paper many times in the past. I recently purchased some HP Everyday Photo Paper for ink jet printers (the R200 is ink jet), and when I use it, the ink not only seems to bead up on the surface, but there are black smudges all over the place. Could this be because I have started using non-Epson print cartridges (to save money). I was using Epson-brand cartridges before, when photos printed fine.

HP and Epson have very different ink delivery systems. Epson delivers ink cold, and HP uses ink sublimation so when the ink hits the paper it is hot. The finish on the HP paper is designed to bond to a heated ink which the epson is not.

With high quality paper you always need to get a brand tailored for your printer as the finish does matter, as you are experiencing.

Provided you purchased a reputable compatible the ink should not be an issue. Paper is just as important to print quality as the ink is. I
